Huntington Beach Channel and Talbert Channel Sheet Pile Repair Project
Location: Huntington Beach, CA
Owner: County of Orange
Description: The steel sheet piles (SSPs), along the existing flood control channels, were corroded and determined to have less than 10-years serviceable life remaining.
This $68M progressive design-build project includes installing approximately 17,000 LF of new SSP directly behind (land side) of the existing SSPs. The new SSPs were designed with sacrificial steel thickness, avoiding the need for cathodic protection or marine coatings which had proven ineffective in this area.
An existing timber pedestrian bridge spanning the Talbert Channel requires temporary relocation and re-construction. New surface drainage improvements comprising concrete curb and gutter, and inlets with check valve outfalls were also included.
The new SSPs will be capped with Fiber-Reinforced Polymer (FRP) molded caps and handrailing will be installed where required for safety.
